Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue massage therapy is similar to Swedish massage as far as the use of the same strokes but with a Deep Tissue massage, your therapist applies slow, firm pressure to release muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). A Deep Tissue massage may improve circulation, reduce aches and pain, increase range of motion, and ease inflammation.
It’s not unusual to have some lingering soreness for a few days following this type of massage. Using a heating pad or a cold pack wrapped in a towel may help to relieve any soreness.
It is best suited for people who engage in highly physical activities, those who may have an injury, and any chronic pain. If you have a low pain threshold, are pregnant or are only looking for relaxation, Swedish massage is gentler and may be a better option. Though massage therapy is generally safe, Deep Tissue massage uses very firm pressure and may not be safe for everyone, so speak to your doctor before trying it if you have any serious underlying medical conditions.
You should always tell your massage therapist if you feel pain during the massage. The therapist can adjust the technique and/or pressure to further prep the tissues if the superficial muscles are tense.
As always, tips are welcomed and appreciated
